Which way to go from vegas?? driving please

going from florida to vegas.... renting car n vegas, dont know yet if "driving" or "flying" to oroville, but if we do drive, which way is better to take: drive straight up to reno then over to oroville, or drive to cali and go straight north through sacramento? we are going in september. thanks!
