How can i erase this virus of my computer?

my boyfriend tried to play some stupid game that popped up......anyways i tried 2 get on the computer and i had a new toolbar....a ask.com homepage also......well i tried 2 watch a movie and next thing happen....a whole bunch of windows were popping up.....this virus thang kept saying it detects a virus....but im startin 2 think its a virus...its called VirusRemover2008.....it will not uninstall off my computer and it keeps popping up...now o shortcuts are popping up....can someone please help me....i really need this computer for my school work....
