A vasectomy done by a reputable doctor is as safe as any other surgical procedure. It is simple enough that many doctors do it in their offices. There will be some pain at the incision site. After the procedure, there is still the need for another form of contraception for up to two months, as there is still viable sperm in the vas deferens.
