What did critics and people think of Mark Twain when "Huckleberry Fin" came out?

The book was thought by many a masterpiece (as it is) but it was also seen as coarse and crude. Huckleberry Finn is not a conventional or acceptable boy, and his working cl status did not sit well in some starchier drawing rooms.
